Therapeutic Approaches
The Oaks Treatment Center provides a consistent, predictable, structured and nurturing environment for daily activities, group therapies, recreation and education.
Initial assessment and observation are key components in individualizing our therapeutic services. The evaluation process allows the therapist in concert with the treatment team to implement approaches that will benefit the patient.
Verbal communication can be challenging for individuals coping with developmental issues. Therefore, alternative measures are used to encourage communication. Patients can express themselves through drawings as well as physical activities.
Our fully equipped play therapy room is often utilized by the therapist for this patient population. Free play, observation, and role playing present a less threatening approach to those who are not capable or comfortable with verbal expression.
Socialization skill development is a significant focus in helping these youth transition to a less intensive setting. Much of the therapeutic work is provided through structured group therapy and community groups. During the groups the patient is encouraged to express his/her feelings, maintain accountability for behavior and practice alternative coping skills.
The Behavior Enhancement Program approach is incorporated in all aspects of their life. Each patient’s behavior enhancement program is designed to meet their individual level of functioning. Responsibility is placed on the patient to manage and change their own behaviors. As part of the level system, positive behavior is rewarded with increased privileges, such as staying up later at night, special recreational activities along with off-campus supervised outings. There are no punitive consequences for negative actions although limits are consistently implemented to ensure that patients demonstrate more positive behavior.
Within our secured school on campus, each patient receives self-paced educational instruction from certified special-education teachers in our year-round school program. Additional expertise supports the learning disabled student to make educational gains while in treatment. An interdisciplinary team inclusive of our school staff ensures a cohesive approach to maintain individualized treatment throughout the daily milieu.
Therapeutic recreational activities are developed to promote positive use of leisure time. Respect for team mates, positive feedback using “win/win communication”, and acknowledgment of personal boundaries are reinforced in the group activities. Participation in the ROPES program encourages problem-solving and creative thinking.
This experiential hands-on approach is less intrusive for the developmentally delayed population and allows them to manage challenges in a positive way.
In preparation for discharge, functional life skills are taught, practiced, and emphasized by all treatment team members. Grooming, personal hygiene, manners and basic care of the living space are all practiced during the patient’s everyday life.
Family and/or guardian participation is critical to the treatment progress of the developmentally delayed youth. Family therapy and work is focused on re-integration of the child back into the family, community and school settings. The treatment team helps the parents learn effective behavioral approaches to maintain the identified gains and to assist the patient with a successful transition.
